COLD, WET MAY BRINGS A BARN FULL OF HAY

Good morning!!! Or Good Day as some would say. I have been here racking my brain trying to think of something to write about without much success. I considered Mother's Day but that is already past. The only thing that is coming up is Memorial Day and what can I say about that. I could probably say a lot but since I am feeling a little bit lazy, I am not going to research it. I do know it has been a cold, wet month of May, which brings to mind the old adage "Cold, wet May brings a barn full of hay." If you are as I am then you are already planting flowers and/or vegetables and possibly doing a little landscaping in the yard. I spoke to one woman who told me her husband is an aggressive gardener and in April was already harvesting vegetables like spinach and lettuce. Unfortunately, we had that little frost just a week or so ago in some areas, which could have potentially hurt some tender seedlings.

I attended Vern's Feeds Open House on May 4 and was extremely disappointed with myself for only having one check on me, which I needed for Eb's grocery store. Vern had the most beautiful, healthy bedding plants-flowers and vegetables. He also had a hanging plant that I just had to get. Just my luck it was 1:15 PM and they close at 2 and not enough time to run home to get some more checks and run back down to Laceyville, so I tried calling home to get either my daughter or my husband to bring me more checks. Darn, they were not home either. They had left to pick up a bunk bed set for my granddaughter. I was so afraid of having a slim plant selection on Monday that I hurried down early on that morning to pick out the ones I had my heart set on. Luck was with me!!! The hanging basket was still there as well as peppers, tomatoes, and several choices of annual flowers. They also had just enough bags of potting soil left on the shelves. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on the perspective, let me tell you after I left their potting soil selection was pretty slim.

We are doing container planting this year as something different. I was busily filling my huge containers for the tomato plants when my husband happened to meander by and informed me that I was planting the tomato plants all-wrong. What? I have been planting them like this all my life and I am no spring chicken. This is how my parents taught me and that was how I was doing it. Well, he had been reading his gardening book and proceeded to tell me how I was planting them was wrong. The correct way, according to Dave and his gardening book, is to strip off the lower leaves; observe the bend in the stem, plant it on its side with the curve facing up. I was then informed in no uncertain terms that by stripping off the lowest set of leaves and planting on its side, the tomato plant would then get a better, healthier, hardier root base yielding hardier, healthier tomatoes. Okay. Well, if he wants to plant this way, he can do it and he did. If you were a little mouse around here that day, you would have heard some very interesting conversations. However, hey, they are only tomatoes after all, right? Unfortunately, he seems to be right. Hate to admit that especially to him. Ruin my image, you know. :-) The tomatoes have been in a week and they are very green and very healthy looking. They are not spindly looking and the stem actually looks thicker. I guess it goes to show that we can learn something new every day. I seem to be learning a lot lately from everyone around me. My dilemma is whether I admit that little fact to them or just keep it to myself and keep my persona of being a "know-it-all." (LOL-Laugh out loud.)

Learning brings something else to my cluttered mind. Have you ever visited http://www.emode.com? It is a very interesting site. They have IQ tests and more. I took the IQ and Survivor (like Survivor on CBS, which we are huge fans of and never miss) tests. I am bragging here, patting myself on the back, and saying "Good Job." According to their statistics, 95% of the population ranks between 70 and 130 on the IQ test with 68% falling in the 80 to 120 ranges. My score was in the 95% and above the 68%. I am not a genius by any means, but not a slouch either. I guess I just learned a few things in my life from those around me when I feel like admitting it.

On the survivor test, I came out a "Sage." According to the test, the Sage's greatest asset is venerability (worthy of respect: worthy of respect as a result of great age, wisdom, remarkable achievements, or similar qualities). Aside from being a person of deep wisdom, sage is also the leaf of a plant. This leaf makes a fresh, mint seasoning, and can be added to meat and poultry. Yeah, right. Boy, did something goof up in this test. Anyway, it is fun to see how it goes and compare with your friends. The address is http://www.emode.com. Go and have a good time taking one or all the tests from your Goddess groove to who is your type to what breed of dog are you at work, and everything in between. Personally, I am afraid to take the "What breed of dog are you at work" test. I think I might come out a bear!!!!!

Smile, laugh, and have a good Memorial Day Weekend. Enjoy the food, family, and camaraderie.

Regards,

Cheryl Carnright

ARE YOU WONDERING WHY YOUR MARKETING CAMPAIGNS AREN'T AS SUCCESSFUL AS YOU HAD HOPED?

Over the years, we've found that most businesses involved in building a brand usually miss some key component of a marketing initiative-communication on all levels with your customers. It's not just advertising....it's not just PR....it's not just direct mail...it's not just promoting your product or service. In fact, no marketing effort should begin without the three key phases of a marketing campaign. If your company isn't willing to invest in these three areas, you might as well throw your dollars down the drain. Your project will never work in the long run, your brand will not be built, your product will not be sold.

If you are ready to begin a marketing campaign that builds your brand, sells your product, increases market share, and increases profits, let us help you.

Visit our local stores for your Holiday Shopping. You'll find some unique gifts available on Main Street, Laceyville. Linda's Corner Store, Laceyville Hardware, Vern's Feed Supply, Eb's Market, Indian Hill Antiques to name a few have just the right gift for Valentine's Day, Easter, and more.

Do you have a business and want to advertise your specials? For a nominal fee of only $5.00 for up to a 10-line advertisement we can promote your business in our monthly email newsletter. Contact Cheryl to get your business on-line.
