The Art of Vacuuming
By Cheryl Carnright
I know, I know. What can a person say about vacuuming? Actually,
quite a bit. Because I have very little time (yeah, like that’s
true!) I’ve studied the science of getting my older carpet with heavy
traffic from adults, kids, & animals to see how I can get it to keep
looking its best. This is what I found:
Did you know that the slower you vacuum the cleaner your carpet
gets and the longer it will last? Yep, that’s absolutely true and
I’ll tell you why.
By going really slow and I do mean s-l-o-w…you allow the beater
head to really beat and suck up the dirt. If you zip right through
what happens is the vacuum can’t keep up and it’s not working
efficiently. One good way to tell is to see how full your bag or if
you use the wind tunnel bagless vacuum cleaners, how full the
container is when you’re done. When you’re completely done vacuuming
you should have a goodly about of dirt to the point you may need to
empty the dirt container or change the bag. If you don’t need to,
it’s because you’re extremely clean with no animals or kids or you’ve
zipped right through, which means you’re not really getting your
carpet as clean as it could be.
The answer, slow it down to the point that it’s barely moving
across the floor and don’t just go in one direction by vacuum in
several directions. Boy, will you see a difference!
When vacuuming, really watch to see what way the nap goes on your
carpet. Yep, that’s right see which way it goes. The reason is
because once you determine that, then you’ll know how to bring it up
so that it doesn’t look flat and once again have that cushiony feel
as you walk across it. Play around with different directions until
you get it down so that you don’t end up with those ugly clumps that
are matted together. I think you know what I mean. When you go slowly
and watch the nap, your carpet can end up looking almost new.
Will this work for every carpet? I can’t guarantee that and I
don’t make any claims but I think you’ll find that your carpet will
look better and it’ll be cleaner.
In this day and age of speed, there are certain things still need
the slow and steady approach. Vacuuming is one of them. Make a game
of it. You can listen to your favorite music, tune out everything
else, or it’s an excellent time to think about things as you’re
mindlessly vacuuming your carpets.
Well, I guess I’ll see what else I can study while I don’t have
anything to do (I wish!).
Have a good one & enjoy!
