Reviews
"In England there are round artificial mounds which can be
climbed by carved paths that circle the man-made mountains. It
is believed that climbing these paths up the mountain was an
initiation into a priesthood of the ancient beliefs. The paths
circle each mound seven times, however, the paths dip three
times so that the climbers, upon reaching a point where they
think they have almost attained the heights, must instead
descend to the bottom of the mountain and start all over
again. This is the way the ancients had of seeing if you
really wanted to get to the top of their mountain.
Teachings of the Winged Disk by Phaedron
Hierophant, Holy Order of the Winged Disk, is very much like
one of these descents. You may think you know it all, and the
learning may have even come easy, now lets see if you really
want to learn.
This book is not for the beginner on the spiritual
path, nor is it for the intellectually faint of heart. It is a
hard way to learn. There are easier way6s to learn the
contents of this book. Basically, from other books. Yet the
lesson this book teaches is not so much in the knowledge
within, and there is a great deal of that, but in the
experience of reading and absorbing the information in this
manner. It comes hard and fast like repeated blows. There are
things that must be learned the hard way. One of those things
is experience. And this book is an experience.
While not one for the Socratic method (asking students
questions and letting them come up with their own answers)
Phaedron makes pronouncement after pronouncement. 'If You Do
Not Make Use of What is Given it May be Taken Away.'
When you read about fanatics who call themselves Occultists,
know that they are frauds. 'This new Age' let me give you the
white light and hackneyed follow me because my way is centered
around an Avatar who's works I've memorized in a four year
ashram program or similar seminar somewhere,' do not work.
'Don't deny your will by waiting for miracles to happen.'
This is all information that a serious student of the
Occult does eventually learn on their own. However, Phaedron
does not lead you to it. Unlike the saying 'You can lead a
horse to water,' Phaedron makes you drink and drink deeply.
Teachings of the Winged Disk is an overview of
an occult philosophy lightly touching on (with a heavy boot)
the use of a magician's (magickan as it is spelled in the book
to differentiate between the trickster and a student of higher
magic) will, the Qabalah, the ancient religion of Egypt,
Tarot, Astrology, Alchemy, Relationships, Sex, Respect for
Nature and its part in the study of Magick, Herbalism just to
name a few.
It is like the author is saying, so, you want to learn
to be a magician? Okay, let's throw you into the deep end and
see if you can swim. Just one thing, you arms and legs are
going to be bound with iron. And if you sink, well, too bad.
That's why I would suggest this as a must reading, but
only after you have already made some progress on your
spiritual path and have some previous knowledge of all the
subjects touched upon in this book. It is another and valuable
way of looking at all you have already learned. It is a
necessary experience, just to see if you really want to
proceed on this path. Is this a mountain your really want to
climb?"
